The hair and beauty industry has changed a lot over the last decade, but for better or for worse, Eli Saikaley, co-owner of Silver Scissors Salon, has remained resilient.

This year Eli celebrates 40 years in the hair industry – an impressive milestone in any sector.

What have been your top three career moments?

My involvement over the years with multiple charitable events.

World travel for education and inspiration including: Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Barcelona, New York, Montreal, Toronto and the United Kingdom. As well as, stage work at ABA (Allied Beauty Association) beauty shows in Montreal and Toronto.

Connecting with our guests over the years and establishing lifelong friendships.

After 40 years in the industry, what inspires you to keep going?

I am inspired by my clients’ joy and happiness with our services. As long as I’m in demand and smiling behind the chair, I will continue on with this amazing journey.

The hair industry has evolved a lot over the past 10-12 years, the salon culture isn’t what it was when you first started. What is your hope for the future of the industry?

Our industry, like others, has definitely changed.

My hope is that people coming into the profession understand this is not a career that will bring a quick financial fix.

I have had to persist through competition, long term construction in front of our doors, Covid lockdowns that cost us our second location and a devastating fire that displaced us for three months.

It was our persistence and the connection we had with our community and customers that got us through it all.

This profession is a long term marathon with many challenges but it has its rewards. It all takes time.

What do you want your legacy to be?

I would love to be remembered as a Hairstylist who was loyal to his clients and who refused very few customers in need of hair services. As well as, the multiple charities I have supported and been involved with – too many to mention!

It has been a great journey and it’s not over yet! Even though styles have come and gone – what hasn’t changed in my 40 years is our customer service, it’s always about making sure our clients enjoy the experience!
