Texture Hair Salon is well known in Ottawa and in the industry for having talented and award winning stylists. But what is more inspiring is the importance they put on investing in new talent. Ramsey, owner of Texture Hair Salon, has created a salon culture – one that inspires his stylist to be passionate about their work and always strive to reach for the top and be their best.
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”

Katrina Starke Kuras
Hair Stylist and Make-up Artist
What inspired you to go into the beauty industry?
Growing up my mom ALWAYS took me to the salon when she got her hair done, and I was so intrigued by everything. I have memories of myself running around a salon sweeping up hair and thinking it was so cool. I was that little girl who never stopped asking questions. Also, having a unique image as a teenager was always very important to me. My Hair and make up was a way to express myself without getting into trouble and I took advantage of that. Once I realized how important it was to me, I wanted to be the vehicle of self expression for other people. There is no greater feeling than someone loving their hair and feeling great about themselves because you helped them achieve their “look”.
Where did you do go to school?
The Loft Academy.
How long have you been with Texture Hair Salon?
I’ve been with Texture Hair Salon for a year and a half, and I’ve loved every single day of it – haha.
You have the opportunity to work with and learn from a team of talented and industry recognized Senior Stylist. What has the experience been like so far?
I sought out Texture Hair Salon specifically because I had heard so much about their talented team. It was intimidating at first, I was surrounded by people who’s careers I respected greatly and could only dream to make for myself. The cool thing about all these Stylists is, not only are they passionate about doing hair, but they are eager about sharing their skills and experience with the newer Stylists. I never could have imagined how much support I would have by my coworkers. Everyone there are true leaders and the greatest mentors, I am so lucky to have the opportunity to work there.
You did the makeup for Ilona’s 2013 Wella Professionals Trend Vision competition entry. Where did you get your inspiration for the look?
Ilona and I worked very closely to come up with the look. She showed me her inspirations, and then we collaborated on the final look. I practiced a lot as well. I must have done the look at least 5 times before the real competition in Vegas and each time Ilona and I tweaked it until we were both happy.
In 2013, the salon made Trend Vision history in Vegas. How was it being a part of that experience?
It was INSANE. Trend Vision is a dream of mine, I’ve always wanted to get into competing. Being backstage, assisting and seeing how the whole competition worked was an eye opening experience. It re-affirmed my career choice about being in the hair industry and seeing the endless opportunities that are available for Stylists. The only disappointing thing about Trend Vision was that 20 minutes after being done my work as an Assistant/Make up Artist, I fell and broke my elbow! I’ve also just recently did my photo shoot for the Sebastian Professional What’s Next competition, wish me luck!
What are some of your favourite hair and makeup products?
My go to hair products are Sebastian Professional Whipped Cream, Mousse Forte, and Re-shaper. Best styling products! I am a make up junkie, I can’t get enough of it, and I use a very broad range of products. The 3 I use the most are – Kat Von D Autograph Eyeliner, Make Up Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation, and Jane Iredale Amazing Matte Loose Finishing powder.
What is the most valuable trick of the trade you have learned so far?
Having confidence in my skills.
What do you want to be known for or what mark do you want to leave on the industry?
Eventually I want to be one of the top Stylists in Canada, doing fashion weeks all around the world and to experience success in competing. I want to be the Stylist who’s clients have the utmost trust in them when they are in my chair.
What’s the best thing about going into work every day?
Making people happy, and working with the amazing Texture Hair Salon team.
Aside from being a Hair Stylist and Make-up Artist, you are also a Cupcake Artist. I saw your chocolate chip cookie dough cupcake and it looks amazing – calorie free obviously. (FYI – I’m totally going to order some, once I finish my eat clean 20 day challenge.) Tell us a little about Katrina’s Cupcake Creations.
It started a little over 2 years ago when I first moved to Ottawa. I would always bake cupcakes for my friends birthdays and eventually people loved my cupcakes so much they would order them for their friends birthdays and off it went.
If you had to do a hair inspired cupcake – what would you create?
I would make it based off of some of my favourite hair products. A chocolate base, filled with a chocolate mousse and topped off with a whipped cream frosting? Haha.
If you were a cupcake, what flavor would you be?
I would be a chocolate chilli cupcake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting. It would be very sweet but with a hidden edge.
Since we are a fashion and beauty blog, would you mind answering some personal questions? Do you have a daily beauty routine?
Do I ever! I always start the day with my Clarisonic Face Wash, moisturize with Clinic Dramatically Difference Lotion, and prime my face and eyes for makeup. I tend to stick to creative smokey eyes, can’t say I am afraid of any colour! I always start with my eyes first and then move to my skin to prevent from fallout muddying my concealer. I also have a lot of fun with my hair, either it will be up in a fun updo, down with a nice blow out, or curled with my extensions in. Always wave and movement in my hair, its NEVER straight – haha.
How would you describe your personal style?
Classy, goth-glam, 1950s – I wear a lot of black and not because I have to!
Who is your style icon?
Kat Von D, Micheline Pitt (Beautiful Model, talented stylist and 1950’s inspired fashion designer) and Betsey Johnson of course!
Let’s hear some of your favorites:
piece of clothing you own: Any of my Betsey Johnson dresses!
pair of shoes: Knee high black leather boots, can’t get enough.
accessory: My hair.
What is your favorite way to pamper yourself?
A trip to Sephora!
Finally pick three words that describe you best.
Sweet, Passionate, Edgy.
